Linen is part of a healthcare facility’s infection-control chain. Bed sheets, gowns, scrubs and cubicle curtains touch patients, staff and visitors all day. Before you hand them to an outside laundry, check that their process protects that chain at every step.
1. Segregation at source
Linen should be sorted into clearly marked, colour-coded bins on the ward, for example general ward linen, staff uniforms, and curtains or towels. Your laundry partner should keep that separation all the way through.
2. Isolated wash cycles
Ask directly: is healthcare linen ever washed together with hotel, salon or household laundry? The only acceptable answer is no.
3. Thermal or chemo-thermal disinfection
Disinfection comes from the right combination of temperature, time and chemistry. Ask the vendor to explain their cycle for each linen category and the disinfectant additives they use.
4. High-heat finishing
Steam pressing and ironing add a second thermal barrier and leave linen crisp and presentable for patients.
5. Sealed, clean transport
Clean linen can be re-contaminated in transit. It should be sealed in protective wrapping immediately after finishing and kept physically apart from soiled linen in vehicles.
6. Documented counts
Piece counts at pickup and delivery help nursing heads manage par stock and spot losses early.
7. A trial and a visit
Ask for a trial batch, and if you can, visit the plant. You’ll learn more from walking the floor than from any brochure.
